eat this, wear that

Cinco de Mayo is coming up this weekend and what better way to celebrate than by combining booze and baked goods. These margarita cupcakes look too good to pass up and will probably find their way to my dinner table this weekend. Add a little flair to this lace-trimmed white dress with lime green accents and cork wedges. A sweet and fun outfit to wear while sipping margaritas and munching on tortillas and salsa.

Happy Monday everyone! And a very happy birthday to my friend Brittany!

currently reading: fifty shades

Alright, it's time to discuss a sensitive {or not so sensitive} subject.

It's about to get intimate.

I'm sure everyone has heard the buzz over this book series. It kind of came out of no where if you ask me. One day, it wasn't really on anyones radar. And the next, it was topping best-seller lists and making headlines.

{Image via Barnes&Noble.com}

I just started reading the book yesterday so I'm not too far into it yet. It's obviously not some great literary masterpiece and can't be listed with the greats of Jane Austen or F. Scott Fitzgerald so don't try comparing it to that. It really should just be taken exactly for what it is - a romance novel {that was once Twilight fanfiction}. It's extremely {EXTREMELY} NC-17, which I wasn't expecting. I've never read a novel like this before so I had really only prepared myself for some light erotica, but the sex scenes in this book are so descriptive! So incredibly descriptive that there were some moments when I am completely embarrassed to be reading it in public. In fact, while making the commute back to NJ yesterday, I found myself really blushing during one scene. I mean, I was turning red and getting hot because the scenes are that steamy!

I can't stop reading it though since I really do want to know what all the fuss over it is. So once I finish it, and perhaps the other two in the series, I will be sure to share my thoughts!

cutting-edge caviar

Have you seen this new nail trend? Ciaté, a nail polish brand based out of the UK, has developed this nail effect that seems to be creating quite the stir. Tiny beads, meant to look like caviar, are poured onto wet nail polish, creating a 3D effect on your nails. This is a head turning style and one that I'm sure isn't for everyone. I'm still a bit unsure of it myself.
{Nail Polish in Strawberry Milkshake, Caviar Pearls in Rainbow}

{Nail Polish in Snow Virgin, Caviar Pearls in Mother of Pearl}

{Nail Polish in Ghetto Fabulous, Caviar Pearls in Black Pearl}

Honestly, I think it's a bit much for everyday. It could be pretty for a party or special event though! Reviewers of the product have also said that it only lasts 48 hours at the most if you apply a top coat to the tips of your nails {and only the tips}.

Caviar Manicure kits, as well as regular Ciaté polishes, are now being sold at Sephora stores and online at Sephora.com for $25. If you like the look but don't want to spend the money, this is an easy DIY. Just head over to your nearest craft store {Hobby Lobby, Michael's, etc.} and purchase tiny pearlescent microbeads such as these from Martha Stewart.

Have you tried out this nail trend? Are you into this style?

weekend recap

I spent this past weekend in Washington, DC, visiting some historic monuments, eating delicious food, seeing a great show, and seeing my wonderful friends Ari and Hillary. I fell in love - so, so completely in love - with DC and am still wishing I was there!

{View from the top of the Kennedy Center, Come Fly Away - amazing show!, The Washington Monument}

{The White House in the distance, a fun and bright outfit, my friend Ari and his friend Nick, the National Archives}

{The Lone Sailor statue, Paul in DC!, poetry reading nights at Bus Boys and Poets, the menu}

I hope you all had as wonderful of a weekend as I did!

eat this, wear that

After spending a semester abroad in France, macarons found their way to the top of my list of desserts and pastries. These violet macarons with buttercream filling sound both dainty and delicious. Shades of purple, especially lilac, are one of the spring trends that I am eager to try. I love the muted shade of the lace overlay skirt paired with a simple white tee and lilac accessories.

friday's fancies: picnic primped

This week's Friday's Fancies theme, picnic primped, was so appropriate with the warm weather we've been having here in the suburbs and New York City. With temperatures today heading into the mid-70s, I can only wish that I could head to Central Park for a stroll and a nice picnic with friends.

A casual outfit for a casual and fun day in the park with friends - sounds perfect to me! I think this picnic calls for these tasty salads from The Everygirl, classic brownies, and homemade lemonade. It all sounds delicious to me! What food are you making for your picnic?

Have a great weekend everyone!

tu me manque

{Petite-France}

{Cathédrale Notre Dame de Strasbourg}

{A trip to the market for food to study and eat in French class}

{Stopping to take pictures at the Eiffel Tower on a weekend visit to Paris}

I've been in a bit of a funk lately, though not sure why. But last night, I stumbled upon some pictures of my semester abroad in Strasbourg, France during my junior year of college. Looking through them put a smile on my face and cheered me up a bit. Most of my friends chose to go to London then so I didn't actually know anyone in my program til I met them at JFK airport on that sunny August day. Scary, huh? Living in a different country, making new friends, and living with a host family {who wouldn't speak to me in English!} certainly made for fun and interesting moments. I can't really think of too many experiences that top my four months in Strasbourg. I miss it dearly and can't wait to go back!

a fun blogger swap!

In late March, I decided to take part in a blogger swap hosted by Lin of Linny's Vault. I've seen so many blogger take part in something similar so I decided to try our for myself. This one seemed easy enough - select a few of my favorite things within the $15 budget and send them to the blogger I was paired with. But once I decided what I wanted to send to my partner Kristin of Kristin's kNook, I realized that $15 didn't allow me much wiggle room to get the things on my list. I was happy with what I picked for Kristin {I hope she was too!} and I most certainly loved what I got!

{Look at that adorable packaging! Happy with this already!}

{Starburst Crazy Beans Jelly Beans, Carmex chapstick, Target scarf, pink & yellow notepads, pens in fun colors}

I love chapstick but have never tried Carmex so I'm excited about this. The Target scarf is light and gauzy, perfect for the unusually warm April weather! The notepads and the pens are so fun. And those Starburst jelly beans? I've never had or seen them before, but I love them! No, really. I opened up the bag to try a few and these have found their way onto my list of favorite candies. If you haven't tried these, I suggest finding yourself a bag ASAP. They are that good.

Kristin, thank you so, so, so much for everything you sent! I'm so happy with everything you sent!

on my playlist: morning workouts

{Image via Shape.com}

In June 2011, I made a decision to start working out more often and to eat healthier {a story for a later date...}. Not to toot my own horn, but I think I've made great progress. I went from rarely working out to going to the gym at 5AM. Yes, you read that right. I go to the gym in New York City at 5AM.

I think part of being successful in this is having some great music to listen too while you're sweating your butt off on the elliptical or on the treadmill. Music that is upbeat and uplifting will have you wanting to hop on your machine of choice and get your body moving! And if you don't listen to the songs on your workout playlist often, it's even more of a treat when you do.

Here are some from my current workout playlist:

2. Snoop Dogg & Wiz Khalifa feat. Bruno Mars - "Young, Wild, and Free"
3. Cleptomanics - "All I Do" (Radio Edit)
4. One Direction - "What Makes You Beautiful" {I'm not even ashamed.}
5. Karmin - "Brokenhearted"
6. Don Omar - "Danza Kuduro" {Not in English but it is so catchy!}
7. MSTRKRFT feat. John Legend - "Heartbreaker"
8. Duck Sauce - "Barbara Streisand"
9. Ellie Goulding - "Lights" (Bass Nectar Remix)
10. Coldplay feat. Rihanna - "Princess of China" {I use this during my cool down or while stretching.}

What's currently on your workout playlist? I'd love some new suggestions!

Spring is in full swing with warm temperatures and sunny {and sometimes rainy!} weather. Strawberries are in season and these strawberry cupcakes are on my list of things to bake in the next few weeks and inspired this sweet look for today. Pink scalloped shorts, a light tank top, and comfortable flats are the perfect outfit for a sunny day. Grab a bag to tote around your essentials and a cardigan - just in case! - and you're all set for a stroll in this beautiful spring weather.

friday's fancies: pretty in pastels

Pastels are one of the trends for spring that I am loving! Pastel colors scream 'spring' to me and always put me in a happier mood. I love that the soft shades can be easily paired together or dressed alone with neutrals or brighter colors. I think this is definitely a trend that everyone can try and not be worried about.

So for this week's Friday's Fancies pastel theme, I tried to put a look together that incorporated these spring hues and would be acceptable to wear to the office. I am always looking for ways to brighten up my work wardrobe and this might be one of my favorite ways!

As always, I am linking up with {av} of long distance loving. Head over to check out all the other pretty in pastel looks!

Have a wonderful Friday {Happy Friday the 13th! :] } and a great weekend!

products i regret buying

I haven't done a 'products I regret buying' post since my first one in February. This is mainly because of operation spending freeze and my decision to curb spending. It didn't occur to me until last night - oops! - that I could write about things I had bought in the previous months {or last year} that I ended up being unhappy with.

Note: These are things that didn't work for me. People can and will react differently to these products.
1. Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Concealer in Honey: Several of the beauty gurus that I follow on YouTube use this product and raved about it. I absolutely loved this for the first few days. It was so creamy and went on smooth; I thought I had found a great drugstore concealer. But after about a week, I noticed that the skin underneath my eyes was extremely dry and flakey. I stopped using it to remedy that, but it happened once I started using it again. Needless to say, this was wasn't as great as I hoped.
2. NARS Lipstick in Tanganyka: I thought this color was beautiful. It looks dark in the picture, but it went on sheer. But this lipstick was SO. DRYING. My lips were so chapped when I used it. This was so disappointing because NARS products are not cheap.
4. Benefit Cosmetics They're Real! Mascara: I wanted to try this because, again, YouTube gurus had said great things about this. And I have to say that they were right - this mascara is wonderful! The brush and formula reminded me a lot of CoverGirl LashBlast, my favorite mascara of all time. But this is actually the reason I regret buying it. Because it's so similar to LashBlast, I can't justify paying $22 for it when I can pay $9 for it at the drugstore.
5. Yes to Cucumbers Facial Towelettes: Another recommended YouTube product {I watch a lot of these videos}. I think the packaging is fun and attractive, and the scent is wonderful. I used this during my nightly face routine but was very disappointed with it. It left my face feeling very dry and tight, even after I put on lotion. I'm not sure how their other facial towelettes are, but I wouldn't purchase them based off of this.

Are they any products that you've purchased recently that you are unhappy with? Have you tried any of these?

operation spending freeze: 40 days done!

I embarked on my own operation spending freeze after learning that Alison from long distance loving started her own journey earlier this year. I thought it would be a great challenge for me to cut out spending on clothing, accessories, and makeup for the 40 days of Lent. And surprisingly, it wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be. A relief really, because I thought I was going to struggle. Instead, I kind of loved the idea, especially since I knew that saving meant more money towards my own apartment.

But if I had been able to spend during those 40 days, these are a few things I would have considered purchasing.

I'm pretty sure these will all be purchased eventually, just not sure when. I've adopted a new way of thinking when it comes to spending and saving. And I've started putting money away in an envelope after each paycheck for specific items. My mom gave me the idea and I think it's a great one!

Do you have any methods for saving and spending?

Happy Wednesday!

TOMS and one day without shoes

Today marks One Day Without Shoes, an initiative by TOMS that encourages people to go barefoot for one day to raise awareness on the impact a pair of shoes can have on a child's life. Millions of children around the world live without shoes and are at a high risk of disease, infection, and injury. This simple challenge {all you need to do is go barefoot!} is meant to spread the word and awareness. Go to OneDayWithoutShoes.com to find an event near you, register, and learn more about this cause.  And if you can't go barefoot today, don't worry! You can still help out by doing it virtually.

I've always loved the message and movement Blake Mycoskie and TOMS shoes has spread {for every pair of shoes purchased, they donate one to a child in need}.  However, I will admit that I don't actually own a pair - yet! Now that my operation spending freeze is over, I've been thinking which pair I want to purchase.

If you have a pair of TOMS, do you love them? I'd love to know your thoughts! And if you participate in One Day Without Shoes, I would love to know how it goes for you too!

White chocolate raspberry cookies are one of my favorites {right behind oatmeal raisin chocolate chip and snickerdoodles}. I thought this dress was a great stylish - and beautiful! - representation of the cookies. Just add a touch of gold with a textured clutch and chain - trimmed pumps and you are all set!

friday's fancies: flower power

Friday is here! Friday is here! I will admit that I feel a bit guilty for being so excited that it's Friday when I just got back from New Orleans on Tuesday and only had a two day work week {I'm off today}. Still, I am always a little giddy when Friday rolls around because it means that that the weekend is here!

And this weekend the weather is supposed to be in the 60s and I can't wait for the warm and sunny weather. This warmer spring weather has me anxious to break out some spring trends, especially florals. For this week's Friday's Fancies theme of flower power, I decided to round up a few floral printed items that I wouldn't mind adding to my closet.

A different approach for me this week, but I had a hard time choosing which floral printed item to choose. I want them all!

I hope everyone enjoys their weekend! Happy Easter!

back from the big easy

Our flight from Louisiana landed at about 8:15PM last night.  I spent a fun four days in New Orleans with my parents where we ate delicious food, walked a lot, and saw some great sites - in addition to great basketball!

{Delicious meals and desserts at great restaurants.  And of course, some beignets!}

{Some fun sites on Bourbon street, in the Garden District, and at the French Market.}

{Great basketball by all the Final Four teams - congratulations to the Kentucky Wildcats!}

It was quite the weekend!  I'm happy to be home in NJ and excited about my two - day work week I have.  I hope everyone had a fun weekend!
