products i regret buying

Another edition of this series!

As I've mentioned several times, I have very sensitive skin. So I'm cautious about what products I use, especially on my face. I was really disappointed that these products didn't work for me because I actually really like Aveeno and use some of their other products.

*Note: These products did not work for me but does not necessarily mean that you will have a similar experience/reaction.  All opinions are my own. Products were bought with my own money.

All three of these skincare products, despite being moisturizers, didn't do anything for my skin. When I purchased these products, I was looking for something that was moisturizing and hydrating for my dry skin. These just weren't it. Like I said, I was disappointed because I really like Aveeno products. In fact, I currently use another one of their moisturizers and daily cleanses. Sometimes it's just about playing around with different products from the same brand til you find what works for you.

memorial day weekend recap

I spent the weekend in Naples, Florida with my family where temperatures were hot and the sun was shining. We spent our days lounging {really, napping} on the beach and our nights at the great restaurants at The Ritz-Carlton, Naples. It's safe to say, despite working out every morning, that I gained a few pounds. Unfortunate, but the food was amazing and definitely worth it. But now it's back to the daily grind {and diet!} today. I hope you all had a fun and relaxing weekend too! Happy Wednesday!

eat this, wear that

Happy Memorial Day! Memorial Day Weekend is usually spent with friends and family, barbecuing, and taking a few dips in the pool. Bring this salad with you to a barbecue with fresh grilled shrimp and refreshing salsa of pineapple, strawberries, and serrano peppers. And to match, throw on a summery gauze shirt and chino shorts over a coral and floral bikini. Bright yellow nails and comfy espadrille flats are both great additions for the warmer weather.

friday's fancies: memorial day weekend

I'm headed off to Florida with my parents for a nice, long five-day weekend. The weather has been awful and rainy all week so I'm excited for the change in weather. With sunny skies and warm temperatures in mind, I put together an outfit that will take you from the pool to the stroll around town for this week's Friday's Fancies.

I hope you get to enjoy the long weekend relaxing and having a bit of fun! What are your plans?

camera bags

If you follow me on instagram or Twitter, then you know that for my birthday my parents gave me a brand new camera. I could not be more excited about it and can't wait to start using it. I have a lot of reading and playing around to do but I can't wait to start. I'm also hoping to take a class this summer or this fall so that I can really develop some skills.

Before that though, I know I'll be toting this camera around, especially since I plan on using it a lot for this blog. I definitely want to use a bag that will protect my gear but is still cute and fashionable and has room for my everyday necessities. These are a few that I found and really like.

I like them all so much that I don't know which one to choose! Which one is your favorite? I would love your input or to hear other suggestions you have!

DIY: glitter makeup brush holders

When I saw this DIY from Something Turquoise, I wanted to jump in my car and head to Michael's to purchase everything I needed for this project. While I love original idea of champagne glasses {and plan on making them in the future}, I thought this would be great to tackle on for make up brush holders. This was my first ever DIY {I actually did these late one night in January} and I'm so happy with how they turned out!

{I know, I know. I have a lot a of makeup brushes.}

This DIY is super simple. I unfortunately didn't take pictures after each step, but it's simple enough that you probably don't need them - though I promise more photos for my next one!

Supplies:
Glass containers {I found mine at Michael's}
Craft paint {I used Martha Stewart Multi-Surface Craft Paint in Beach Glass and Verdelite}
Tape {I used plain old scotch tape but painter's tape would work really well}

Step 1: Clean the containers with alcohol and let them dry completely before painting. Tape around the top of the container so that your design starts about an inch below the rim. Make sure there are no bubbles or ridges so that you get a clean line.

Step 2: Using a clean pouncer and the satin paint, start dabbing the paint onto the glass. Use more paint at the top of the container and lessen the amount and pressure towards the bottom. This creates a fading effect. I painted two thin layers and allowed for 20 minutes dry time in between.

Step 3: With a different and clean pouncer, use the same painting technique from Step 2 with the glitter paint to paint another two layers on top of the satin paint. Allow for the same drying time. You'll end up with something that looks like this.

Once the paint is completely dry, slowly and carefully remove the tape and you will end up with a nice, straight, and clean line. All that's left now is to fill it with your brushes and find the perfect spot to display your pretty new brush holders!

carrot cake cupcakes

I am probably one of the few people that touts carrot cake as their favorite. In fact, when I spent my third birthday in Disney World and my mom asked what kind of cake I wanted, I told her carrot cake. A three year old asking for carrot cake? Unheard of. I don't know really know what it is about it that I love so much, but I just do. Maybe it's the carrots {one of my favorite vegetables} in a cake that is loaded with cinnamon and paired with a rich cream cheese frosting that is the perfect balance of sweet and tangy.

Even though I love it so much, I've actually never made it before until this past weekend when I thought it would be a nice early birthday treat to myself. I used this recipe from Martha Stewart and they were wonderful. Perfectly moist cupcakes with a smooth and creamy frosting. I definitely recommend trying these out {because I promise carrot cake is really good}!

eat this, wear that

With my birthday coming up this week, I have birthday outfits and birthday cake on my mind. And that means sprinkles, sprinkles, sprinkles! What's not to love about this funfetti cake with sprinkles on this inside and even more on the outside? I would love to wear this birthday outfit with a gold sequin skirt and pair it with bright accessories in different colors for some added fun.

friday's fancies: chambray season

I'll be honest, I didn't love chambray at first. In fact, it took awhile to grow on me before I could even consider owning any. But now? I think I wear my chambray shirt too often because I love it that much. My colleagues at work probably think it's one the only shirts I own. Dressed up or dressed down, with solids or with patterns - chambray is something that everyone should add to their closet.

Now that temperatures have warmed up in the city and in the suburbs, I think this jumper would be a great casual go-to. Comfortable sandals in a bright color, a bag to hold your essentials, a few bangles, and a fun watch with an ombré face {love!} and you're all set for some daytime fun with friends!

The weather should be nice all weekend here so I'll be enjoying it and soaking up some sun. What are your plans?

Happy Friday!

things i'm afraid to tell you

{Image via Ez}

I'm sure by now that you are very aware of this Things I'm Afraid to Tell You movement started {unintentionally} by Jess and spread by Ez. Meg started the most recent wave of posts and after reading through all of the posts from the participating bloggers, and other inspiring entries from Nikki, Liz, and Carly, I decided to suck it up and post my own.

So here it goes...

Despite being a straight-A and honor roll student in grammar school and high school, I really struggled in college.

I have no idea what I want to do in life or what career I want. I majored in International Relations in college and thought I wanted to have a career in a related field once I graduated. Wrong. I hated my major and often wish I had switched when I had the chance. Now, a year after graduation, I'm still unsure of what career path I'll be taking. I wish that I could incorporate all of my interests and hobbies into a job that I love, but I have yet to gather the courage to take that leap of faith to do something on my own and that I love.

I don't know how to ride a bike. Or do a cartwheel.

I have a hard time making and keeping friends. I can be shy and awkward when I first meet people and I don't always do such a great job of keeping in touch with people. This doesn't always bother me though since I'm an only child and I'm so used to doing things by myself. I've never had any issue going to movies alone, shopping alone, eating at restaurants alone. In fact, sometimes I prefer it to being with a group of people.

Sometimes I think that I've let my parents down and that I'm not doing enough to make them proud of me.

I'm very particular about my things. I like things to be in a certain order and arranged in a certain way. It makes me a difficult person to live with.

I don't like to let people borrow things. If you ask the sorority sisters that I lived with during my senior year, they will tell you how true this is. Unless I trust that a person will return it to me as soon as they can after they finished using whatever it is I let them use, I don't really lend things out.

I've struggled with my weight and self-image issues for as long as I can remember. It's a constant thought in my mind and has bothered me all my life. So much so that I often cry about it. I was always the girl surrounded by thin and fit friends but could never attain that myself. It took going to my doctor after graduating from college and hearing a number that I am extremely ashamed of to finally get my butt into gear. I'm still not comfortable with myself or the way I look. I still have days where I get upset with myself over how I look, but I think I'm getting to a place where I can be happy.

I hate doing dishes. But I love doing laundry!

birthday wish list

My birthday is coming up next week and I won't lie, I'm pretty excited! Birthdays are always so fun and are such a happy occasion that you can't help but be in a wonderful mood. In the past, especially when I was younger, I always put together a wish list for my parents for things I wanted. As I've gotten older, I've started having a more difficult time putting anything on my list because I always try to choose things that I need and not just want. This year, I've decided to treat myself to a few things that I've been contemplating purchasing for awhile now.

I also made two early birthday purchases - this Kate Spade ring {currently on sale until 11:59PM tonight!} and this monogram necklace from Moon and Lola. Happy early birthday to me!

Do you like to treat yourself on your birthday? What kind of present do you like to get for yourself?

you are a citizen of this world

Graduation season is here and with that comes the endless number of commencement speeches. Something that I really love doing is watching the speeches given at different colleges. I've had so many favorites over the years and am now adding this one to the list.

Aaron Sorkin was the commencement speaker at my {and his!} alma mater's commencement ceremony this past Sunday. I may be a bit biased, but in my opinion it was a phenomenal speech and much better than the one given during my graduation ceremony.

A quote from the speech: "And make no mistake about it, you are dumb. You're a group of incredibly well-educated dumb people."

What's not to love?

Congratulations to all the 2012 graduates! Go get 'em!

eat this, wear that

Blueberry and bacon in a cake? For breakfast? Not a combination I would think of immediately, but I wouldn't mind having a serving of this in the morning! Blueberry and bacon put into your usual coffee cake with cinnamon swirl topped with a cream cheese glaze - yummy! Serve yourself a piece and then head to work in a similar color palette. A neutral colored shift dress should be something every girl has in her closet. Pair it with navy blue accessories, like a belt, pumps, and a statement necklace, and a tan handbag big enough to hold all your essentials and you're ready to take on the day.

Happy Monday!

friday's fancies: color crush

When it comes to clothes, I tend to gravitate towards neutral colors and the occasional blue or coral items. The blogging community has encouraged me to be more adventurous, and more prints and color have found their way into my closet. Yellow is a color that I've tried to incorporate more into my wardrobe {I currently own two yellow shirts} and I think this pairing of yellow and pink is a color combo that I need to branch out and try.

switcheasy

I have a hard time selecting iPhone cases because I'm so picky about the way they look and what they're made out of. I love Kate Spade cases but two of the hard cases have cracked and the soft case became too stretched out. I also really loved my personalized monogram case but it didn't cover the entire phone {the top and bottom were exposed}. My favorite cases have come from J. Crew because of the fun prints, great fit to the phone, and good price. I'm currently using this bold orange floral print case but the color has definitely dulled. It's actually a bit dirty, which I really don't like, so I've been looking for a new one.

Enter SwitchEasy.

SwitchEasy makes iPhone cases {among many other cases for Apple products} in so many fun designs and colors that I found it so hard to choose! I finally decided on this mint colored case and am anxiously awaiting for it to arrive! Below are some of the cases that I love.

dark and dramatic

When Met Gala pictures started appearing on the internet on Monday night, I couldn't help but notice how many celebrities opted for deep and dark lips. Such dark lipstick is usually seen more often in the fall, but various shades of red and berry appeared in the spring 2012 runway shows of designers like Prabal Gurung, Donna Karan, and Anthony Vaccarello. The stars took to the trend, and I have to say that I am loving this dark and dramatic look. A touch of glamour and old-Hollywood is always in style.

night to day

I was feeling incredibly tired yesterday so I went to bed much earlier than usual. I've had my eye on these pajamas from J. Crew for awhile now and certainly wouldn't mind slipping into them before heading to bed. It got me thinking about how to style pajamas {in this case, pajama tops} for daytime outfits. I actually think that these two looks could be acceptable for running errands, a shopping trip, or a lunch date.

I may or may not be considering buying something similar to this to try out this look. I think if styled correctly, you can definitely wear pajamas during the day.

What are your thoughts? Yay or Nay to the pajama daytime look?

eat this, wear that

This Strawberry Lemonade Trifle looks delicious and sounds delicious and refreshing. I can only imagine that the sweet strawberry and poundcake layers pair perfectly with the citrusy lemonade whipping cream. I think the pink and yellow pastels of this outfit deliver the sweetness and punch needed to brighten any day. Sam Edelman sandals are my usual go-to during warm weather months. And how beautiful is this Marc by Marc Jacobs bracelet? I love rose gold so it's definitely something I wouldn't mind adding to my collection {if I had the money to spend..}.

Happy Monday!

friday's fancies: decked out for the derby

It's sure to be an fun-filled weekend with the Kentucky Derby and Cinco de Mayo. I posted a margarita cupcake-inspired outfit earlier this week and a few ALICE by Temperley dresses to wear to a fun fiesta. Yesterday, I was inspired by this delicious derby pie and paired it a beautiful lace dress. And today, we're off to the races! I opted for a simple look with a dress in a bright color {coral, one of my favorites}. I love coral and turquoise together so I chose dainty bangles to wear with it. Pearl earrings, nude pumps, and of course, a hat {wide-brimmed in my case} finish off this outfit, one that I certainly wouldn't mind wearing to the Derby.

Will you be sipping on mint juleps and watching the Derby tomorrow? Or will it be a day of tacos and margaritas? Maybe a bit of both? Whichever you choose, I hope it adds to a fun weekend!

eat this, wear that

Another edition of Eat This, Wear That because I just couldn't leave out this dessert with Kentucky Derby   happening this weekend. This Run for the Roses pie from Martha Stewart looks absolutely delicious. A rich buttery crust with a chocolate, pecan, and bourbon filling? Pass me a slice please! Make this for a race viewing party and wear a pretty latte colored lace dress with nude pumps and consider yourself Derby ready.

my favorite minnie

{Unfortunately I am not talking about Minnie Mouse, but I love her too!}

I found my new favorite pair of pants in the J. Crew Minnie Pant. I have no idea why I haven't tried these on sooner but I really love them. So much so that I got three pairs over the weekend {in Vibrant Flame and Black, but would love to own all the colors}. They are so comfortable, so flattering, and so chic. Dressed up or dressed down, these pants add polish to any look.

dresses for cinco de mayo

Last night, I stumbled upon these ALICE by Temperley dresses while looking for an outfit to put together for this weekend. I love the off-the-shoulder cuts and lace trim on all four. A bright yellow dress would be a fun punch, and the black mini adds a bit of glamour. I think any of these would be great for a Cinco de Mayo fiesta, complete with margaritas and piñatas, that goes well into the night.
