get ready, {jet} set, go!

I am off to the Dominican Republic today with my family for some sun and relaxation. We're taking an early flight out and will be landing midday so that we have time to settle in and enjoy the rest of our Saturday afternoon. I can't wait to escape the cold and winter wear for warmer temperatures and my new favorite bathing suit! My laptop will be shut off for the entire week so I'll be back in April with a new post and some pictures of my vacation. Have a lovely weekend! See you in a week!

friday's fancies: spring wishlist

One of my goals for this year is to save up money for the things that I've been thinking about getting for awhile now. I decided to set aside money at the end of each month and can happily say that I've already saved up the money to buy one of the two items! And while they are at the top of my 2013 wishlist, there are a few other things that I'd love to have this spring.

Quite a wishlist, isn't it? I know I won't be buying the majority of these things, but it's nice to think that it's a possibility. If I had to choose, the Mara Hoffman swimsuit {absolutely love the back!} and eyelet sneakers would be the first things I'd grab!

I want to know - what's on your spring wishlist?

Have a great weekend!

from my bookshelf

Lately, I haven't been reading as much as I usually do. I've had a hard time finding books that really catch my interest and keep my attention so I haven't been picking up my Kindle as often. While I used to be able to go through a book in a few days, now it's taking me weeks. Awful, right? I'm hoping to get back into the rhythm of reading more often soon but wanted to share two books that I've read recently and really enjoyed.

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green || The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein

These two are New York Times Bestsellers and are reads that will draw you in immediately. While I wouldn't really consider either to have sad endings, they're very emotional and moving. I cried at the end of both. Take note, if you're at the gym and nearing the end of The Fault in Our Stars, don't finish it there. You will cry on the elliptical and get funny looks.

And you may recognize the title of John Green's novel. It's being turned into a movie, something I'm very excited about!

I highly recommend reading both. They're quick reads with interesting story lines {the second is told from the perspective of a dog!} and are books that would be enjoyed by everyone.

If you have any book recommendations, let me know! I'm always looking to add books to my "to-read" list!

wit and wisdom

There isn't much that I don't love from Kate Spade, and right now, I love just about everything {like this dress, this coral bag, and this ring} on their website! I first spotted this fun iPhone case at Bloomingdale's while doing some weekend shopping with my mom a few weeks ago and vowed to make it mine once I had the iPhone 5. The smart quotes from Dorothy Parker are on several Kate Spade items and are all fabulous. Her clever phrases are full of wit and wisdom and are just too good not to share!

kate young for target

Target had a great collaboration with Prabal Gurung and they've got another great one coming up with Kate Young. If you're not familiar with the name, you will be after you see the pretty and feminine pieces she's designed for her Target collection. She's a personal stylist to the stars so you've most likely seen Natalie Portman and Rachel Weisz wearing looks she's put together for them on the red carpet. Clearly she's got great style. Her collection is full of affordable sophisticated pieces like blazers, tops, and shorts, special occasion dresses, and sparkly accessories.

What's not to love? These are a few of my favorites, but the entire collection is pretty spectacular. The April 14th release date can't come soon enough!

Head over to Target to see her lookbook and let me know what your favorites are!

eat this, wear that: creamsicle orange

Syracuse may have lost in the Big East Championship game to Louisville {boooooo!} but now the tournament has started and it's a whole different game. And what better way for me, a Syracuse alum, to celebrate than with lots of orange? Orange truffles, orange pants, orange jewelry - I just couldn't resist. But really, I love these DVF pants paired with the lighter shade of the Tippi cardigan. Toned down with a white tank and nude pumps and you've got a really fun monochromatic look.

Happy Monday! Are you rooting for anyone in particular during March Madness? I'd love to know!

happy pi{e} day!

I can't think of a better way to celebrate Pi Day than with yummy, delicious, and comforting pies. I actually used to really dislike any type of pie until I made my very first one for Thanksgiving this past November. That cherry pie converted me!

I know that I'll be ending my day with a piece of pie. Now I just need to decide on which one...

{Guinness Chocolate Pie with Beer Marshmallow Meringue - perfect for St. Patrick's Day!}

So tell me, sweet or savory, what's your favorite kind of pie?

Happy Pi Day!

wedge sneakers

Wedge sneakers aren't a new trend, and I'm sure you've seen them popping up everywhere. Over the weekend, I nearly bought this black pair from Target {currently buy one, get one half off!} but wasn't sure how I felt about the color. They're at a great price and much more comfortable than I imagined so it may have been worth it. But to be honest, I still can't really decide how I feel about this trend.

So what do you think? Yay or nay to wedge sneakers?

baked and glazed grapefruit donuts

Grapefruit donuts? YES.

When I first saw this recipe on A Beautiful Mess, I knew that I needed to try it as soon as I could. As a lover of grapefruit and grapefruit juice, I was pretty convinced that I would love them if I made them. So over the weekend, I set out to make a baked version of these delicious glazed grapefruit donuts.

Baked and Glazed Grapefruit Donuts
{adapted from A Beautiful Mess and Searching for Dessert}

For the donuts:
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup white sugar
2 tbsp. packed brown sugar
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
zest of one grapefruit
1 large egg
1/2 cup skim milk
2 tbsp. olive oil

For the glaze:
1/2 cup grapefruit juice
scant 2 3/4 cups powdered sugar

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
2. Mix the flours, sugars, baking powder, salt, and grapefruit zest in a mixing bowl. Mix until combined.
3. Add the egg, milk, and olive oil and mix until just combined.
4. Spoon or pour the batter into prepared donut pans sprayed with baking spray. {I filled mine about half way.}
5. Bake for 8-12 minutes. {Mine needed the full 12 minutes.} Remove from the oven and let cool on a cooling rack. Let them cool completely before dipping in the glaze!
6. While the donuts are cooling, whisk together the grapefruit juice and powdered sugar in a bowl.
7. Place a covered baking sheet {I used foil but you can use paper towels or parchment paper} under the cooling rack. This makes for an easy clean up after you've dipped the donuts.
8. Dip the cooled donuts in the glaze and place back on the cooling rack. If coating more than once, let the glaze set in between each coat. I dipped mine three times in the glaze and then let them set overnight.
9. ENJOY!

I'm a bit sad that I didn't take any back to the city with me but it's probably for the best. I'm telling you that these are some seriously delicious, sweet and tart donuts - a perfect and super tasty breakfast option!

Now go give these a try and let me know what you think!

eat this, wear that: boozy shades of green

You most likely don't associate beach vacation and bathing suits with St. Patrick's Day, but warm beach weather has been the only thing on my mind as of late. Right now, the two just go hand-in-hand for me. And really, munching on Baileys Irish Cream Puppy Chow while lounging on the beach sounds pretty great to me! A bathing suit in shades of green to match worn with a chic jersey cover up and wedge sandals complete your beach going outfit. Sun, sand, and boozy puppy chow. Sounds pretty good don't you think?
Happy Monday!

friday's fancies: lace love

One of the things that I really love are lace dresses. I find them to be so pretty and ladylike that I always have such a hard time talking myself out of buying all the ones I see in stores. If I could, I'd probably fill up my closet with tons of lace dresses in different colors and silhouettes.

With a beach vacation coming up at the end of the month, I have been thinking of what to lightweight pieces to pack, which is why this dress caught my eye. Made of lightweight cotton, this dress is perfect to wear during the day to the beach and then at night to a restaurant. I like this dark midnight blue dress paired with corals, pinks, and whites to add a little brightness.

I'm headed home for the weekend to relax and get a super early start to vacation packing. What are your plans?

Happy Friday! Have a great weekend!

jewelry from henri bendel

The weather was nice this weekend {a bit chilly but so sunny!} so I decided to take a stroll along Fifth Ave. I stopped in Henri Bendel and spent most of my time there browsing the jewelry section and loved just about everything I saw. I ended up walking away with this pretty gunmetal and gold ring and haven't taken it off since! If my budget allowed it, I'm positive I would have walked out with much more.

keds & kate spade

I'm sure you've heard about the Keds and Kate Spade collaboration, but I couldn't help but share the pairs with you. How perfect are they? I absolutely love the polka dot and gingham pairs and think they'd be great this spring and summer. Wear them with jeans, shorts, skirts, and dresses - I really think these classics will go with anything. And at a reasonable price, it wouldn't hurt to have all four in your shoe collection. It's a limited edition though so make sure to pick up these pretties before they're gone!

Which pair is your favorite?

eat this, wear that: the tropics and a green smoothie

A beach vacation at the end of the month means having to put on a bathing suit, something I {and my body - eep!} are not ready for. I've been trying to eat much healthier in preparation and have been trying to take in more fruits and vegetables. Of course, that's not always possible which is why green smoothies with tropical flavors like pineapple and mango are perfect. And I think this outfit would be perfect to take in your suitcase. Shorts are perfect to show off newly tanned legs while you can keep your arms warm for the ocean breeze with a polka dotted button down. Sunglasses are a must and I love the retro look of these.

Is all this talk having you wish you for warmer weather? Because I most certainly am.

Happy Monday!

friday's fancies: bling bling

When it comes to jewelry, I usually gravitate towards gold and rose gold pieces. Lately though, I've found myself contemplating incorporating more silver and gunmetal into my collection. While these particular pieces are out of my price range, I still think they're absolutely beautiful. A girl can dream...

I'm in love with both of Kenneth Jay Lane pieces and the flower cluster rose gold and silver charm on that Alex Monroe necklace. And, how gorgeous is that Valentino necklace? If only the price tag weren't so high!

Check out all the other beautiful jewelry featured on long distance loving for this weeks Friday's Fancies!

Happy March! Have a fun weekend!
