orange crush

I'm headed up to Syracuse University tomorrow for our big basketball game against Duke and I could not be more excited! It's been a little over two years since I've been back on campus and I can't wait to walk around, even if I know it will be quite cold and there will be snow.

I've been thinking about this trip for weeks now and already know that my bag will be full of orange-colored things. In honor of the weekend and the big game, here are a few of my orange favorites from around the web!

Orange Crush || Sprinkles and Style

Before attending college where orange is the official school color, I rarely ever glanced at anything in the shade. Now I can't get enough of it! I think it's a great color to add a bit of brightness to your wardrobe!

Have a great weekend!

video: product empties #3

This might seem odd, but some of my favorite videos from beauty vloggers on YouTube are their product empties videos. If you think about it, you're really just watching someone go through things they need to throw away, talk about whether or not they liked it, and tell you if they'll be buying it again. A strange thing to like watching isn't it? It's hard to use up a full product, especially makeup, so I think they're pretty fun to watch.

Here's my most current video of product empties!

video: products i didn't like #2

It's no secret that I'm a bit of a beauty junkie. As much as I love trying out new products and samples, sometimes they end up being a dud. Here's my newest video on some of the things I've tried out and didn't love.

#howtobehappyjanuary

I was watching some YouTube videos yesterday and stumbled upon some from Nikki Phillippi, who is doing a video series this month on how to be happy {hence the hashtag #howtobehappyjanuary}. I thought this topic was so great because, to be completely honest, I am not the type of person that is peppy and bubbly and happy every day. I have bad moments and bad days and bad weeks all the time. But this year, I've tried to make it more of a priority to start seeing the good in each day instead of focusing on the awful and not-so-great things.

What's one way I've started working on how to be happy? Lately I've been putting on some music {current favorite song is "Dark Horse" by Katy Perry} in the morning and dancing around my apartment for 10 minutes or so. Trust me, a short little dance session can completely lift your mood... and get in a quick workout too!

So I want to know - what do you do to lift your spirits and put yourself in a happy mood?

Have a great Monday!

on the bookshelf

I have several goals for this year - some that I've already talked about {be healthy, take better care of my skin} and some that I have yet to talk about.

One of my goals is pretty simple: to read more often. I came up short of my goal to read 35 books last year, but I'm determined to reach it and then exceed it this year! I usually turn to friends for book recommendations so I asked my friend Selby {you may have seen her featured on Levo League's Beyond the Pencil Skirt!} to give a few suggestions of what to keep on a book list for 2014.

----------------------

2014 is here and with that comes resolutions and goals for your year ahead. For those of you with goals of a literary nature who are unsure of where to start: FEAR NOT. Below is a reading list of the titles to grab now as well as the books to look forward to in the coming months.

2014 Books to Read || Sprinkles and Style
FICTION:
Perfect by Rachel Joyce - The bestselling author who brought us the charming debut, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry returns to the page in a brilliant and daring second novel about young Byron Hemmings who is thrown into difficult realities of the adult world through two seconds that seemingly changed his life forever. {On sale now!}

Remember Me Like This by Bret Anthony Johnston- This book is not on sale until May, but definitely a title to keep on your to-read list for 2014! The novel explores the nature of love and forgiveness when a kidnapped son is returned home. {For fans of Alice Sebold, John Irving, Tom Perrotta, and Jill McCorkle.}

The Weight of Blood by Laura McHugh- I cannot say enough about this book. Add it. Add it. Add it. Debut novelist Laura McHugh delivers a bone chilling and page turning novel that will leave your heart beating. You won't regret picking this up. Seriously. {On sale March 11.}

The Boleyn King by Laura Andersen- If you are looking for a series AND you are a fan of historical fiction AND a sucker for Anne Boleyn and all Tudor-related drama then this is a great one to start in 2014. Andersen dares to explore what history would have been like if Anne Boleyn had a son with Henry VIII. {Start with The Boleyn King.}

Flavia de Luce Series by Alan Bradley- I can't get enough Flavia. This charming and best selling series, set in England in the 1950s, follows 13-year old Flavia, a budding chemist with a knack for solving crimes. Start with The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie and read on!

NONFICTION:
The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg- New York Times best selling author AND award winning business reporter Charles Duhigg studies the science of how habits work, why they exist, and how they can be changed.

Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand- From the author of Seabiscuit comes a rich narrative about Louis Zamperini and his amazing life. From a mischievous childhood to an almost four minute mile at the Berlin Olympics to his experience as a prisoner of war during WWII, this is an unforgettable true testament of one man's resilience of the human mind, body, and spirit.

With or Without You by Domenica Ruta- This is without a doubt one of the most moving and haunting memoirs I've read in the past year. Domenica tells the story of growing up outside Boston with her drug addict and drug dealing mother, Kathi. In addition to overcoming demons of her childhood, Domenica must fight off her own addictions in the process. {For fans of The Glass Castle.}

MORE GREAT READS FOR 2014:
Wake by Anna Hope
The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh
Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann

Tenth of December by George Saunders {short stories}
Not that Kind of Girl by Lena Dunham
Under the Wide and Starry Sky by Nancy Horan

buffalo cauliflower bites

Buffalo Cauliflower Bites || Sprinkles and Style

Over the long weekend, my mom and I decided to test out a new recipe that I had seen so many times on Pinterest. Since there were two big football games on Sunday, it seemed like the perfect time to whip this up.

Buffalo Cauliflower Bites
{recipe via The Curvy Carrot}

Ingredients:

1 head of cauliflower, cleaned and cut into bite-size pieces
1 cup buttermilk {we used reduced fat buttermilk}
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 tsp. garlic salt
1 cup buffalo sauce {We used Frank's because it's our favorite and the best in my opinion!}
1 tbsp. unsalted butter, melted

Directions:

1. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees.
2. Whisk together the buttermilk, flour, and garlic salt in a large bowl until smooth.
3. Gently toss the cauliflower with the buttermilk mixture. Make sure to coat each piece.
4. Place the cauliflower on an aluminum foil-covered baking sheet. Bake for 15-18 minutes.
5. Mix the buffalo sauce and melted butter together in a small bowl.
6. Remove the cauliflower from the oven. Pour the sauce over the cauliflower pieces and gently stir to make sure all pieces on the baking sheet are covered.
7. Return the cauliflower to the oven for another 5-8 minutes, depending on how toasty you would like it.
8. Serve with a side of bleu cheese dressing and some celery and enjoy!

This would make a great dish to serve up to friends and family on Super Bowl Sunday!

eat this, wear that: strawberry coffee cake

As someone who loves to bake and cook, I spend a lot of my time online looking at various food blogs and picking out recipes that I want to try. This one caught my eye because I had a craving for coffee cake and thought it would make a good addition to the Eat This, Wear That series.

Eat This, Wear That: Strawberry Coffee Cake || Sprinkles and Style

I think this coffee cake looks and sounds delicious and would be a great breakfast dish with a hot cup of coffee. And since today is the last day of this long weekend, I thought a more casual outfit that's great for a day of just running around would be a good way to go. I think the embellished collar on the blouse and the statement earrings add the right bit of fancy to dress up this look.

Happy Monday!

now and next: skincare

One of my goals for 2014 is to take better care of my skin. As someone with really, really dry and super sensitive skin {I have eczema}, it's a lot of trial and error when it comes to finding something that works. Currently, I use a mix of affordable and high-end products, but I've been leaning towards making the move to all high-end. Why? Because sometimes it can be really hard to find things at the drugstore that don't include ingredients or fragrances that irritate my skin.

So here's a little peek at what I'm using right now and what I'm thinking of purchasing next!

Now & Next: Skincare || Sprinkles and Style

I have no plans of changing the body lotion I currently use since it's been working so well for me lately, but I am considering making these changes sometime this year. I'm also thinking of trying out this Tarte maracuja oil and finally putting my Clinique body exfoliator to use.

Have you tried any of these products? I'd love to know your thoughts or hear any suggestions!

coats, parkas, and puffers

One of things that I love about having a blog is getting such kind comments and emails for you readers. Whether it's just to say that you like a post or a question about what to wear, I get so excited whenever I see something from one of you in my inbox! If you ever want to ask a question, feel free to email me!

This particular request for today's post came from a former high school classmate of mine. The temperatures here in the city (and in the suburbs) have been fluctuating a lot lately. We had really cold weather with the polar vortex and then it was warmer over the weekend. It's hard to choose a coat to wear in the morning when you know it will be warm in the afternoon and then cold again once you leave the office. I've picked the three types of coats I love and will keep you warm while staying stylish.

Winter Coats, Parkas, and Puffers || Sprinkles and Style

To be completely honest, I always look to the same brands for winter coats - J. Crew, North Face {this fleece and this coat}, and Zara. I rarely look anywhere else because I usually find what I want and need from those stores. Any of these would work well to keep you warm. I'm especially loving the color-block coat, combined faux leather coat, and sherpa-lined parka. I actually own the Winteress Puffer in black and can attest to how great it is!

drink this, wear that: berry smoothie

Happy Monday!

I, like many others I'm sure, spent Sunday night watching the Golden Globes. While I love seeing the winners, the fashion is one of my favorites parts. What does this have to do with this week's Eat This, Wear That? Well, the beautiful Julie Bowen inspired me to choose something with this color pairing because I absolutely loved her dress last night.

Drink This, Wear That: Berry Smoothie || Sprinkles and Style

Purple isn't a color I'm typically drawn to, but I do think these two shades very pretty. Pairing it with just a few bits of red and some edgier pieces like a studded clutch and distressed gray jeans gives a good balance to this outfit.

Wondering what other dresses I loved last night? I thought Helen Mirren, Olivia Wilde {rocking that baby bump!}, Reese Witherspoon, Sofia Vergara, Emma Watson {so into the pants look}, and Margot Robbie all looked stunning. My best dressed of the night for sure! Who did you love?

TGIF!

Glitter Keds {via A Little Dash of Darling} || Sprinkles and Style

It's Friday! Finally! This week felt incredibly long, and I'm attributing that to it being my first full week back at work. I could've sworn at the end of each day that it was Friday. Now that the weekend is finally here, I'm planning on doing a little organizing, a little reading, a little exercising, and a little relaxing.

I'll be back next week with a few more of my 2014 goals. Have a wonderful weekend!

workout wear

Are you sensing a theme this week?

I mentioned in yesterday's post that one of my goals for the year is to live a healthier life. Besides trying out new recipes in an effort to eat better, getting on a regular workout schedule is also important. But sometimes it can be really hard to put your sneakers in your gym bag and get yourself out the door and to the gym. I'm a firm believer in the idea that having nice clothes to wear while exercising can make you want to go. I've rounded up some of my favorite pieces that give me a little boost of confidence when getting my workout on.

Workout Wear || Sprinkles and Style

I'm a big fan of Athleta and C9 by Champion. Both are really great quality and hold up during your workout and in the wash. You won't be disappointed with either brand! Some other things you may want - a water bottle, headband, and a great gym bag.

Where do you go to get your gear?

healthy dishes

One of my goals for 2014 is to develop a healthier lifestyle. I'm not saying that I was completely unhealthy before, but I probably indulged a little too much and didn't exercise enough. I'm planning on stepping up my workout game and trying out new healthy recipes.

These are some that I've tried and love and others that I found and have added to my 'to make' list.

Healthy Dishes for 2014 || Sprinkles and Style

Don't they all looks delicious? Both salads are my go-tos when I don't know what to make for myself at dinner time. I'm already a fan of overnight oats so this Chia Charger would be right up my alley. And turkey chili? That would be perfect to dig into during this polar vortex!

Do you have any healthy recipes to share?

PS. I know that a lot of these recipes came from Eat Yourself Skinny. I couldn't help it. It's my favorite blog to check for lightened up recipes!

keeping warm in layers

Friends, if you haven't heard, the really cold winter weather has finally hit New York City. As I sit here writing this on Monday night, I heard the wind howling outside and am sure that if I were out there, I'd get blown over

I'd love to say that I'm keeping warm in my apartment and staying cozy in bed on this chilly Tuesday, but this girl's got responsibilities {aka a job} so I'm bundling up and braving the cold.

Layer Up to Keep Warm! || Sprinkles and Style

Today calls for lots of layers and cozy sweaters. I'm throwing on some simple basics that will keep me toasty all day - knee-high socks under my jeans and tees under chunky sweaters. Of course, the normal cold-weather essentials like a beanie, scarf, gloves, and a parka are necessary too. I don't know if there's such a thing as being too warm today!

For all of you experiencing these cold temperatures, I hope you're keeping warm and enjoying a day inside!

drink this, wear that: raspberry kale green smoothie

Well, hello there! I'm trying to get back into the swing of, well, everything really. Back to work, back to blogging, back to healthy eating. The holidays took a toll on my usual diet, but one of my goals {I feel like using the world 'resolution' is a setup for failure} for the year is to keep healthy habits. With the amount of food and sweets consumed over the holidays {really from Thanksgiving and til New Year's Eve}, I could use a green smoothie or two.

Drink This, Wear That: Raspberry Kale Smoothie || Sprinkles and Style
I'm already a fan of green juices and smoothies, but it was the raspberries that attracted me to this one. I have no doubt that when you see the recipe for this smoothie you'll want to try it out. The raspberry red color is a great contrast with green so why not add a bit of color to your workout ensemble with a braided headband? It's cute, functional, and gives some brightness to a simple outfit of leggings and a tee. Some printed sneakers add that little bit of fun!

Happy Monday!
